5 Boiler Checks to Do Before Calling an Engineer

What to Do if Your Boiler or Heating Stops Working

There are few things more inconvenient than discovering your boiler or central heating is not working, especially during colder months. Before picking up the phone for a professional, there are some simple checks you can try at home. These quick steps could save you both time and money, either by resolving a minor issue or helping your engineer diagnose the problem more swiftly.

1. Check the Thermostat

One of the most common causes of heating not working is the thermostat. Ensure your thermostat is turned on and is set above the current room temperature so it is actively calling for heat. Sometimes, thermostats get turned down without anyone realising or are set on programmes that do not match your needs.

2. Confirm the Boiler Has Power

If there is an issue with your boiler not showing any display or lights, check the power supply. Look at the main switch or fuse box to see if a fuse has tripped. Make sure the boiler’s power switch is ‘on’ and check nearby sockets, too. Sometimes, simple power interruptions or plug issues are the culprit.

3. Check the Gas Supply

Your boiler will not work without a steady supply of gas. If you have other gas appliances, such as a hob or cooker, see if these are functioning. If not, there could be an issue with your home’s gas supply that needs professional investigation. Also, if you have a pre-payment meter, double check there is credit on your account.

4. Inspect the Boiler Pressure

Modern boilers often stop working if the water pressure is not at the correct level. Take a look at the pressure gauge—this is usually found on the front of the boiler. As a general rule, it should be between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If the pressure is low, consult your boiler’s manual on how to repressurise or contact us for guidance. Do not attempt anything you are not comfortable with.

5. Look for Error Codes or Reset Lights

Many boilers have a digital display or indicator lights. If you spot an error code or a flashing reset light, check your manual for its meaning. Sometimes, performing a simple reset as instructed can get things running again, but note any codes shown so you can share this information with your engineer if further help is needed.

6. Bleed Your Radiators

If your radiators are cold at the top but warm at the bottom, they may have trapped air. Bleeding your radiators can improve heating efficiency and may restore warmth. Always turn your system off first and use a radiator key and cloth to gently release trapped air until you hear a hissing sound and water appears.
