No Hot Water or Heating? Troubleshooting Your Boiler

Boiler Running but No Hot Water or Heating? Here’s What to Check

It’s a frustrating situation: your boiler is running, but you’re not getting any hot water or central heating. Don’t worry, there are a few simple checks you can do before calling out a professional. Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help you get your heating and hot water back on track.

1. Check Your Thermostat and Timer

First, make sure your thermostat is set to the desired temperature and that the timer is correctly programmed. Sometimes the settings can be accidentally adjusted or reset, especially after a power cut. If your thermostat has batteries, check they haven’t run flat.

2. Is Your Boiler Getting Power?

Look at your boiler’s display panel. If it’s blank or showing an error code, check the fuse box to see if a switch has tripped. Reset any tripped switches and see if this restores power. Also, check the power supply to the boiler itself.

3. Boiler Pressure Levels

Most boilers need their pressure to be within a certain range (usually between 1 and 2 bar). If the pressure is too low, your boiler may not function properly. You can usually top up the pressure using the filling loop, but always follow your manufacturer’s instructions. If you’re unsure, it’s best to call a professional.

4. Pilot Light or Ignition Issues

If you have an older boiler with a pilot light, check to see if it’s gone out. Relighting the pilot light is sometimes simple, but if it keeps going out, this could point to a more serious issue. Modern boilers may show a fault code if there’s an ignition problem.

5. Other Common Causes

  • Frozen condensate pipe: In cold weather, the pipe carrying condensation from your boiler can freeze, causing a blockage. Thaw it gently with warm water.
  • Airlocks in the system: Air trapped in your radiators or pipes can stop hot water circulating. Bleeding your radiators can help.
  • Faulty motorised valves or pumps: These parts control the flow of water in your heating system. If they fail, you’ll need an engineer to replace them.

When to Call a Heating Engineer

If you’ve checked the basics and your boiler is still running but not providing hot water or heating, it’s time to call in a qualified engineer. Issues like repeated pressure loss, strange noises or persistent error codes should always be dealt with by a professional.
