Why is My Boiler Losing Pressure?
If you have noticed your boiler pressure dropping, you are not alone. A loss of pressure is a common issue that can affect the performance and efficiency of your heating system. Understanding the reasons behind this can help you decide whether it is something you can resolve yourself or if it is time to call a professional.
Common Causes of Pressure Loss
- Small leaks in the system: Over time, pipework, radiators or valves can develop tiny leaks. These are not always visible, but even minor water loss will reduce pressure.
- Recently bled radiators: If you have recently bled your radiators to remove trapped air, some pressure loss is normal. The system may need topping up afterwards.
- Faulty expansion vessel: The expansion vessel helps maintain stable pressure as the water heats and cools. If this part fails, you may notice pressure drops more frequently.
How to Check Your Boiler Pressure
Most modern boilers have a pressure gauge on the front panel. For most systems, the ideal pressure when cold is between 1 and 1.5 bar. If your gauge shows below this, your boiler may not work efficiently or could shut down altogether.
Step-by-Step Guide: Repressurising Your Boiler
- Turn off the boiler and let it cool.
- Locate the filling loop – this is usually a silver flexible hose underneath the boiler with two valves.
- Open both valves slowly. You should hear water entering the system.
- Keep an eye on the pressure gauge. Once it reaches the recommended level (usually between 1 and 1.5 bar), close both valves tightly.
- Switch the boiler back on and reset if necessary.
Remember, only add water to the system in small amounts to avoid over-pressurising.
When to Call a Professional
If your boiler continues to lose pressure after topping up, or if you suspect a leak you cannot find, it is time to call in a qualified engineer. Persistent pressure loss can indicate a hidden leak or a failing component that needs expert attention. Attempting repeated top-ups without addressing the underlying cause could lead to more significant issues down the line.
